Webinar – XiA Open Learning Session #1: Cybersecurity
January 22 @ 14:00 - 16:00

We are thrilled to present to you our XiA Open Learning Session #1!
For this first session, we will welcome three guest speakers: Juan Carlos Perez Baun (Eviden), Pr. Evangelos Markatos (FORTH), and Dr. Kassem Kallas (INSERM) (to be confirmed).
Juan Carlos Perez Baun, researcher and project leader within Identity Management & Privacy Unit within Strategic & Innovation – R&D Spain, at Eviden (subsidiary of the French ATOS IT group). Focused on privacy aspects (anonymisation and Attribute-Based Encryption), he’s working in Horizon Europe program in projects such as SECURED (Scaling Up secure Processing, Anonymization and generation of Health Data for EU cross border collaborative research and Innovation) leading anonymisation task, and CYLCOMED (Cyber securitY tooLbox for COnnected MEdical Devices) leading identity management and data protection for CMDs. In this session, he will present privacy-preserving mechanisms for sharing health data (including Connected Medical Devices) and decentralised access control: CYLCOMED & SECURED EU Outcomes.
Pr. Evangelos Markatos, Professor at the University of Crete and Founding Head of the Distributed Computing Systems Laboratory at the Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (FORTH-ICS). He’s a leading European expert in cybersecurity and cybercrime. He has served on the Permanent Stakeholders Group of ENISA, on Europol EC3’s Academic Advisory Network, and now sits on Europol’s EC3 Advisory Group on Research & Development, the European Commission’s Health Cybersecurity Advisory Board, and the ECSO Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda Board. His research spans cybersecurity, privacy and systems-level resilience. He will address the new cybersecurity challenges emerging from increased health data sharing under the European Health Data Space—and what this means for secure, interoperable digital health infrastructures: from the perspective of the xShare project.
Dr. Kassem Kallas is a senior research scientist at INSERM (the French National Institute of Health and Medical research) and Junior Professor specialising in AI security and cybersecurity, with an international academic background and an HDR from the University of Western Brittany. He has contributed to major research programmes in the US and Europe (DARPA, NIST, INRIA, INSERM), focusing on adversarial learning, backdoor attacks, and the robustness and privacy of AI systems. Recognised through several awards, publications, and invited talks, he also engages actively in IEEE communities and holds an Executive MBA in strategic leadership. He will provide an accessible overview of key cybersecurity challenges in modern AI systems, focusing on backdoor attacks, adversarial behaviours, and vulnerabilities in distributed models, including those used in healthcare. He will also outline how such threats emerge, why they are difficult to detect or mitigate, and present general approaches to improving AI robustness and security.
