‘Young People\u2019s Sexual and Reproductive Health’\u00a0Symposium 12th January 2017<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Brussels<\/em><\/p>\n

Public Policy Exchange is pleased to invite a EHMA Member to speak at ‘Young People\u2019s Sexual and Reproductive Health: Towards Improved Standards for Sexual Education in Europe’<\/strong> Symposium, held in Brussels on 12th January 2017.<\/p>\n

According the WHO European regional strategy on sexual and reproductive health (SRH), progress has been made over the last 15 years in improving maternal and sexual health, family planning, prevention of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and unsafe abortion. Inequalities nevertheless remain between and within countries, including:<\/p>\n

\u2022 maternal mortality ratios differ 40 times across countries in the Region;
\n\u2022 unmet need for family planning in the Region for which data are available ranges from 5% to nearly 23%;
\n\u2022 STIs are often neglected until serious complications occur;
\n\u2022 access to safe abortion is still a challenge for many due to legal restrictions and lack of access to quality services; and
\n\u2022 one in four women in the Region has experienced physical and\/or sexual violence by an intimate partner.<\/p>\n

The ongoing regional consultation on the development of the European action plan for sexual reproductive health and rights (SRHR) 2017-2021 stresses the importance of investing in a comprehensive sexuality education. It also stresses the need of an inclusive European policy strategy for including adolescents, parents and vulnerable groups such as LGTB and refugees. The action plan highlights the key role of health professionals in achieving an inclusive, high quality sexual health system.<\/p>\n

This symposium will discuss the need to promote a comprehensive sexual and reproductive youth health policy in national strategies. Also, it will evaluate the key role of health professionals in achieving an effective sexual health prevention system and developing mechanisms to empower young people to make good decisions, challenge peer pressure and rebuff risky behaviours.<\/p>\n
