What should the EU prioritize post 2020?&#8217;  &#8211; SMSHealth.eu Project Dissemination event in Brussels."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On 26th April 2018, representatives from the EHMA Secretariat attended the dissemination event of the SMSHealth.eu project &#8216;<strong><em>Health system challenges in small European states &#8211; What should the EU prioritize post 2020?&#8217;.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The SMSHealth.eu is a 3-year project, co-founded by the Erasmus+ Programme,\u00a0aimed at:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Developing and establishing\u00a0a Jean Monnet network of universities and public health institutes<\/li>\n<li>Mapping and understanding\u00a0the small states\u2019 challenges and opportunities of European integration in health<\/li>\n<li>Translating\u00a0findings into policy relevant messages and educational activities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Malta, Estonia, Slovenia, Iceland and the Netherlands were leading the project network, led by the University of Malta (Institute for European Studies, with the support of the Department of Health Services Management and the Islands &amp; Small States Institute).<\/p>\n<p>The study identified three main <strong>challenges<\/strong> to be faced in small EU Member states:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The <strong>Small Population<\/strong> \u2013 resulting in the inability to provide a better quality or quantity and the inability to provide specialized treatment<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>Small Market<\/strong> \u2013 that leads to less competition, administrative burden and higher process, as well as lack of consumer choices<\/li>\n<li><strong>Insularity<\/strong> \u2013 of research and professionals and governance issues<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>In addition to common challenges (present and future), strenghts and differences;
