{"id":3703,"date":"2019-07-17T17:13:18","date_gmt":"2019-07-17T15:13:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ehma.org\/?p=3703"},"modified":"2022-11-30T23:36:59","modified_gmt":"2022-11-30T23:36:59","slug":"recipes-for-a-healthier-europe-by-the-new-commission-president-elect","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ehma.org\/recipes-for-a-healthier-europe-by-the-new-commission-president-elect\/","title":{"rendered":"Recipes for a Healthier Europe by the new Commission President-elect?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.eu-patient.eu\/globalassets\/news\/vdl-logos.png?maxwidth=573\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>Ursula von der Leyen\u2019s medical background has a huge potential, European patient, academic and public health NGOs say<\/b><\/p>\n<p><i>Brussels, 16 July 2019 \u2013<\/i> On behalf of patients, medical associations, health managers and the wider European public health community, we welcome the positive vote for Ursula von der Leyen as the new President-elect of the European Commission.\u00a0 The support of the European Parliament is a huge responsibility and a concrete set of actions are needed to regain citizens\u2019 trust.<\/p>\n<p>Achieving the strong coordination required for a coherent and robust health policy requires political leadership, drive and dedicated Commission resources to meet citizens\u2019 expectations. We call on Ms von der Leyen to include a senior level health commissioner in her team, with a strong mandate, and to ensure that one of the Vice-Presidents of the Commission has overall responsibility for mainstreaming health across the whole of the Commission. We have outlined the main responsibilities for such a role in our<a href=\"https:\/\/eu4health.eu\/to-protect-and-advance-what-matters-most-to-everyone-in-europe-a-commission-vice-president-for-health\/\">\u00a0joint call<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cThe new Commission needs to implement patients\u2019 rights efficiently \u2013 this is why a specific face and voice needed within the Commission, to be an ambassador for all patients in Europe.\u201d\u00a0<\/i>stressed Marco Greco, <strong>European Patients Forum (EPF) <\/strong>President.<\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cThe election campaign is over, promises have been made, the time to deliver is now. Health is consistently prominent in the EU Eurobarometer citizens\u2019 surveys. Will the new Commission listen and mainstream health in its next mandate?\u201d\u00a0<\/i>stated Freek Spinnewijn, <strong>President of the European Public Health Alliance (EPHA).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><i>\u00a0<\/i><i>\u201cWe are confident that the new President-elect with her academic credentials in medicine and public health as well as her previous experience in health and social policy will heed the desire of European people for the EU to engage more effectively in health and will ensure that health science will be reflected in the evidence-based European Commission policies.\u201d\u00a0<\/i>said Natasha Azzopardi Muscat, President of the <strong>European Public Health Association (EUPHA)\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cAn unhealthy population will undermine the European future progress and economic and social development. A coherent, strategic and shared approach on common European health challenges can ensure that the national health systems are managed in a favourable environment.\u201d\u00a0<\/i>said Prof. Federico Lega, President of the <strong>European Health Management Association (EHMA)<\/strong>.\u00a0<i>\u201cSubsidiarity and EU added value go hand in hand.\u201d\u00a0<\/i>he added.<\/p>\n<p>****<\/p>\n<p><em>The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.epha.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>European Public Health Alliance\u00a0<\/b><\/a>(EPHA) is a change agent \u2013 Europe\u2019s leading NGO advocating for better health. We are a dynamic member-led organisation, made up of public health NGOs, patient groups, health professionals, and disease groups working together to improve health and strengthen the voice of public health in Europe.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.eu-patient.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>European Patients\u2019 Forum<\/b><\/a>\u00a0(EPF) is an umbrella organisation that works with patients\u2019 groups in public health and health advocacy across Europe. Our members represent specific chronic disease groups at EU level or are national coalitions of patients.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ehma.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>European Health Management Association\u00a0<\/b><\/a>(EHMA) is a Belgium based non-profit membership organisation that focuses on enhancing the capacity and capability of health management to deliver high quality healthcare. In doing so we strive to improve sustainability and effectiveness of health systems and services, and the well-being of Europe\u2019s citizens and communities.
